Grantee Profile: Webutuck Central School District
Webutuck (Northeast) Central School District (WCSD) is located in the northeast corner of Dutchess County, NY. Encompassing 88 square miles, WCSD serves approximately 600 students in grades pre-K-12th. Located in the Harlem Valley, visitors will find historic sites, cultural opportunities, and beautiful rural scenery. Because of these offerings, the region is a hot spot for weekenders. Concurrently, due to its rural nature and lack of an industrial base, Webutuck is land rich but tax-revenue poor with approximately 60% of the student body receiving free and reduced lunches.
WCSD consists of more than 165 staff who are committed to seeking new ways to enhance the success of our students’ educational outcomes and experiences. This commitment and focus to improve our district is demonstrated by our restorative justice initiative, equity and grading work, and our 5-year partnership with Harvard University’s National Center for Rural Education Research Network to study chronic absenteeism. Finally, the School-Based Health Center (SBHC) project exemplifies the district’s commitment to its students and community. A collaboration between WCSD and Open Door Family Medical Centers, a recognized expert in operating SBHCs, that will provide students with immediate high-quality physical, mental, and dental primary care with no out-of-pocket expenses when and where they need it.
Through the extraordinary generosity of the Foundation for Community Health (FCH), WCSD is the recipient of a $100K grant to make the SBHC a reality. Through the SBHC, both FCH’s vision and WCSD’s mission to address the health and well-being of the greater Harlem Valley will occur. The WCSD/OD SBHC has a targeted opening date of September 2021.
